Occupational Therapy

When to contact an Occupational Therapist:

  • Your child has limited independence in activities of daily life such as selfcare, productivity at school or nursery, and participation in leisure activities.
  • Your child is easily distracted during tasks, especially when in a classroom environment.
  • Your child is unable to sit to complete classroom tasks or eat meals due to fidgeting, reduced core strength restlessness, or they are ‘always-on-the-go’ throughout the day.
  • Your child has an adverse reaction to sensory inputs, such as touch, sight, noise and/or movement.
  • Your child is often observed to be accident prone, clumsy, poor body awareness, frequently falling and/or bumping into things or peers.
  • Your child finds it challenging to learn new physical skills, due to poor hand eye coordination reduced balance, and reduced sequencing or coordination abilities, all of which impacts their confidence and self esteem to engage in these tasks.
  • Your child finds it difficult to adopt a good posture, often slumps in their chair, or is unable to get comfortable to be able to attend to task when sitting and/or remain seated when at a desk/table.
  • Your child has poor organisational skills in all areas of life often forgetting or losing things when getting ready for the day ahead.
  • your Childs visual organisational skills on paper are poor, due to reduced visual perception and reduced visual integration abilities, preventing them from forming letters properly, write on the line or avoid spacing between words.
  • Your child has reduced fine motor skills, such as holding a pencil correctly, poor quality of handwriting, reduced fine motor control when cutting with scissors, reduced finger dexterity coordination, and sequencing to do buttons and/or using cutlery.
  • Your child struggles with social skills and social situations, such as groups or after school clubs. They often becoming emotionally overwhelmed or unable to engage in a group settings due to reduced attention/focus with an inability to follow instructions.
